Sheila Hickey Porcelain

Information

Materials used :

Audrey Blackman porcelain
PCP paper pulp
Transparent glaze
Oxides & underglazes

Fossils, shells, flowers, ferns, feathers, flax fibre and many other objects.

The process begins by blending the clay with PCP pulp to make paperclay.
It is dried and rolled out into sheets and then impressed with fossils, leaves, ferns and shells. Once the sheet of clay has dried it is formed around a cylinder. After awhile the base is added and the vessel is allowed to dry for several days.
When dry it is fettled ( sponged to removed any rough edges ) and glazed internally if necessary.
Oxides & underglazes are painted on if required.
Finally the work is fired in an electric kiln for 10 -12 hours to 1250* centigrade. The kiln takes a further 24 hours to cool down before opened.

Audrey Blackman clay is used for the thrown jugs and vases.
